The nonlinear effects on the characteristics of gravity wave packets: dispersion and polarization relations

Abstract: Abstract. By analyzing the results of the numerical simulations of nonlinear propagation of three Gaussian gravity-wave packets in isothermal atmosphere individually, the nonlinear e ects on the characteristics of gravity waves are studied quantitatively. The analyses show that during the nonlinear propagation of gravity wave packets the mean¯ows are accelerated and the vertical wavelengths show clear reduction due to nonlinearity. On the other hand, though nonlinear e ects exist, the time variations of the fr… Show more

“…A detailed analysis on the temporal variations of wavelengths and frequencies for a freely propagating gravity wave in a fully nonlinear regime was presented by Zhang et al [2000]. It is difficult to quantitatively explain what kind of physical mechanism is responsible for this decrease of wavelength and frequency, possible causes may be the joint effects of nonlinearity [ Zhang et al , 2000] and complex background consisted of waves 0 and 1. Moreover, such a result has never been presented by any previous works relative to the resonant interaction of gravity waves.…”

“…First, the wavelength (as presented in Figure 2) in our simulation shows evident decrease. Zhang et al [2000] has pointed out that the nonlinearity tends to decrease the wavelengths, which is due to the fact that the nonlinear terms in equation (1) (such as u , w ) tend to generate higher wave harmonics. Moreover, the variation of wave parameters cause an obvious departure of the energy propagation path of the excited wave from its ray path derived from the linear ray theory.…”

“…Although is based essentially on the linear gravity wave theory, according to Zhang et al [2000], it can still be feasible in the nonlinear circumstance they considered. Fritts [1984] provided a measure of the importance of nonlinearity by considering the ratio of the horizontal perturbation velocity ( u′ ) to the horizontal phase speed ( c ) of the wave.…”
