The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission's Toxic Substances Control Program for the Ohio River

Abstract: The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) is an interstate agency created in 1948 to administer a state compact which calls for the abatement of water pollution in the Ohio Valley. Since 1975, ORSANCO has conducted routine monitoring programs to detect the presence of toxic chemicals in the Ohio River and in fish taken from the river. “…V OCs were selected for emphasis in the USGS's NAWQA Program primarily because of the previously reported occurrence of some of these compounds in many of the Nation's water supplies. (3,7,8,9,10) The overall intent of the Program's VOC assessment is to provide an improved understanding of the occurrence and geographical distribution of selected VOCs in the Nation's water resources, with emphasis on ground water. The assessment includes both new VOC data collected in the Program's Study-Unit investigations and VOC data from previous studies with a similar design.…”

“…VOCs were selected for National Synthesis because of the occurrence of this constituent group in many of the water supplies in the U.S. (Office of Technology Assessment 1984; Tennant et al, 1992;Pankow and Cherry, 1996). Over the long term, a national assessment of the occurrence, status, and distribution of VOCs in ground water will rely to a large extent on data collected by NAWQA Study Units (Lapham and Tadayon, 1996;Gilliom et al, 1995).…”
