The oldest Devonian circumpolar ray-finned fish?

Abstract: Actinopterygians (ray-finned fishes) are the most diverse group of living fishes, but have a sparse Devonian fossil record restricted to low palaeolatitudes. Here we report a new actinopterygian from the Paraná Basin of Brazil, which occupied a circumpolar position in the Palaeozoic. Available geological evidence supports a Middle Devonian or older age for this taxon, which shares features of the mandibular symphysis with the latest Devonian Tegeolepis . A phylogenetic analysis resolves… Show more

“…Importantly however, underrepresented regions such as Australia (Choo, 2012(Choo, , 2015Choo et al, 2019), and South America (Figueroa et al, 2021) are also producing new taxa. In addition, the widespread adoption of CT scanning allows valuable redescriptions and taxonomic revisions of existing material (Giles & Friedman, 2014;Giles et al, 2015Pradel et al, 2016;Coates & Tietjen, 2018;Friedman et al, 2018;Argyriou et al, 2018;.…”

“…Isolated jaw elements, body impressions and scales from Famennian deposits in South Africa likely represent a single actinopterygian amid a diverse array of other fishes (Gess & Whitfield, 2020), while renewed prospecting in the contemporary Maïder Basin in Morocco has produced remains of a single articulated actinopterygian (Frey et al, 2018) amongst its well-known placoderm and chondrichthyan assemblages. New South American discoveries include evidence of a stegotrachelid actinopterygian from the Frasnian of Colombia (Olive et al, 2019), the first actinopterygian remains from the Devonian of the Parnaíba Basin of Brazil (Pais de Rezende et al, 2021), and a new circumpolar species from the Middle Devonian (Figueroa, Weinschütz, & Friedman, 2021). As in other localities, non-actinopterygian fishes dominate these faunas (Janvier, 2007;Janvier & Maisey, 2010;Figueroa & Machado, 2018).…”

“…The majority of taxa occur at low palaeolatitudes (0° to −30°), with a small number just crossing into the mid-palaeolatitudinal band (−30° to −60°). A clear outlier, near the southern palaeopole (−83.81°), is the recently-reported Austelliscus ferox from Brazil (43).…”

“…Analyses were performed in TNT v1.5 (63) and MrBayes v.3.2.6 (64) using a dataset modified from Latimer & Giles (50) and Figueroa et al (65) with the addition of ten taxa, giving a total of 121 taxa and 292 characters. Full details are given in the Supplementary Information.…”
