“…The timing of warming and upwelling events found in our work coincide with temporal patterns previously reported for the studied areas (Saetre 1985, Wilkinson et al 1999, Shi et al 2000, Andrade & Barton 2005, Amador et al 2006, Wang & Fiedler 2006, Wilkinson & Souter 2008, which confirms the appropriateness of the metrics used to quantify these events.…”

“…In Oman, the southwest monsoon produces winddriven upwelling off the east coast during summer (Shi et al 2000). Anomalously high SSTs in this region have been attributed to unusual warming during the summer months, occasionally linked to ENSO events (Wilkinson et al 1999).…”

“…During the SW Monsoon there was evidence of strong upwelling with cool, lower salinity, nutrient-rich water in the inshore region adjacent to Oman (Lee et al, 2000;Shi et al, 2000). The inshore coastal upwelling region was similar in both hydrography and nutrients to the four other major coastal upwelling regions (Barber and Smith, 1981).…”

“…The coast of Oman is among the most intense upwelling regions of the world, with SSTs 58C or more below the ambient offshore temperature and branches of cold water extending into the Arabian Sea (Elliot and Savidge, 1990;Manghnani et al, 1998). Strong channelling of the flow parallel to the coast and upwelling gives rise to the East Arabian Current (Shi et al, 2000). The upwelling cools the marine boundary layer, thus increasing the thermal gradient across the coast, resulting in stronger winds, which further reinforces the upwelling.…”
