The oophorectomy effect on Walker 256 tumor inoculated into the vagina and uterine cervix of female rats

Abstract: Purpose: Verify the effect of oophorectomy on the evolution of the Walker 256 tumor inoculated into the vagina and cervix of female rats. Methods: Ten Wistar, female rats were used, distributed into two groups with 05 animals each: Tumor group (TG): Rats inoculated with Walker 256 tumor; Oophorectomy group (OG): oophorectomized rats inoculated with Walker 256 tumor. The day before the tumor vaginal inoculation, acetic acid was inoculated into the vaginas of both groups of rats; the following day, the vaginal w… Show more

“…Cholesterol total was maintained at similar levels in all groups (p>0.05), however, its fractions showed a decrease of HDL and increase of LDL and VLDL, mainly from the group 6 (50 days). Wellknown that after oophorectomy, sex hormones circulate in the body at a high level for 21-30 days 11,12 . Therefore, groups 2 to 5 were in adaptation to new condition of hormonal suppression, explaining fluctuations of serum levels identified in this period (30-45 days).…”

“…All surgical procedures were performed in anesthesia (ketamine and xylazine 70 and 10 mg/kg, respectively, IP). The bilateral oophorectomy was performed similar to described by Brito et al 12 . At the end of the following period, 5ml of blood was collected from vena cava for glucose, cholesterol fractions and triglyceride studies, using colorimetric assay, using kits from Labtest ® .…”

“…After 21 days, the female rats were subjected to exfoliative vaginal cytology, then, the content was deposited on the surface of a glass dish, which was immersed into absolute alcohol for fixation. The glass dishes were stained by Shorr (1941) [8] method and then analyzed using an optical microscope in order to characterize the estral cycle, to confirm anoestrus [9].…”
