The ParkinsonNet concept: Development, implementation and initial experience

Abstract: The quality and efficiency of allied health care in Parkinson's disease (PD) must be improved. We have developed the ParkinsonNet concept: a professional regional network within the catchment area of hospitals. ParkinsonNet aims to: (1) improve PD-specific expertise among allied health personnel, by training a selected number of therapists according to evidence-based guidelines; (2) enhance the accuracy of referrals by neurologists; (3) boost patient volumes per therapist, by stimulating preferred referral to … Show more

“…In our MFI strategy, we only indirectly encouraged OTs to collaborate with physicians in their region and the exposure of physicians and managers to interpersonal communication seemed limited. Studies regarding multifaceted implementation strategies suggest that a multidisciplinary and network-based approach is both feasible [32] and effective [39] in improving attitudes, knowledge, and behavior [40]. “…17 The experience with this network was positive, showing an increase in Parkinson specific knowledge among participating therapists, a better adherence to the treatment guidelines, and a more than sevenfold increase in annual patient volume for ParkinsonNet therapists compared with control therapists 18 ParkinsonNet coverage was gradually extended, achieving nationwide coverage in 2010. There are now 66 regional networks with 2970 trained professionals from a wide range of disciplines for around 50 000 patients (figure⇓).…”
