The deployment of crop varieties that are partially resistant to plant pathogens is an important method of disease control. However, a trade-off may occur between the benefits of planting the resistant variety and a yield penalty, whereby the standard susceptible variety outyields the resistant one in the absence of disease. This presents a dilemma: deploying the resistant variety is advisable only if the disease occurs and is sufficient for the resistant variety to outyield the infected standard variety. Additionally, planting the resistant variety carries with it a further advantage in that the resistant variety reduces the probability of disease invading. Therefore, viewed from the perspective of a grower community, there is likely to be an optimal trade-off and thus an optimal cropping density for the resistant variety. We introduce a simple stochastic, epidemiological model to investigate the trade-off and the consequences for crop yield. Focusing on susceptible–infected–removed epidemic dynamics, we use the final size equation to calculate the surviving host population in order to analyse the yield, an approach suitable for rapid epidemics in agricultural crops. We identify a single compound parameter, which we call the efficacy of resistance and which incorporates the changes in susceptibility, infectivity and durability of the resistant variety. We use the compound parameter to inform policy plots that can be used to identify the optimal strategy for given parameter values when an outbreak is certain. When the outbreak is uncertain, we show that for some parameter values planting the resistant variety is optimal even when it would not be during the outbreak. This is because the resistant variety reduces the probability of an outbreak occurring.

A b s t r a c t A r t i c l e I n f oWheat and Triticale rusts (leaf stem and stripe) are important diseases in India and other South Asian countries and in regions of world wherever wheat is cultivated. Rusts are known to evolve over time and space and thus making it necessary to breed new wheat and Triticale genotypes with new combination of resistant genes to rusts for effective management of this menace. In India, the evaluation of newly developed wheat varieties against three rusts initiates even before their entry in to the coordinated yield trials besides, evaluation of these in initial and advanced varietal trials at hot spot locations under artificially inoculated conditions. The numbers of resistant entries of the yield trials, identified against three (stem, leaf and stripe) or two rusts (stem and leaf or leaf and stripe) and falling in the range of average coefficient of infection from 0-10.0 in Plant Pathological Screening Nursery (PPSN) were again tested to confirm their resistance during 2003-04 till 2011-12 crop seasons at hot spot locations: Mahableshwar, Wellington, Indore, Dharwad against stem rust, Hisar, New Delhi, Karnal, Ludhiana, Pantnagar, Durgapura in North, Mahableshwar, Indore, Wellington and Dharwad in South against leaf rusts whereas, Karnal, Pantnagar, Durgapura, Almora and Ludhiana in North India, against stripe rust. These lines have wide genetic base and those identified in AVTs are quite good in agronomic characters. Out of 741 genotypes tested, 460 numbers were found to possess multiple rust resistance. A total of 315 were resistant to stem, leaf and stripe rusts, 90 to stem and leaf rusts and 55 to leaf and stripe rusts. Out of these, 364 of bread wheat (T. aestivum), 71 of macaroni wheat (T. durum), 11 of khapali wheat (T. dicoccum) and 14 genotypes of Triticale were resistant to two or three rusts. These include both types of genotypes falling in the category of ACI 0.0-5.00 and 5.1-10.0 and are used in breeding for rust resistance in India. A total of 20 such genotypes are already released as high yielding rust resistant varieties in India.

O agente causal da ferrugem da folha do trigo é o fungo Puccinia triticina. Essa doença causa danos elevados que podem comprometer a produtividade da cultura do trigo em até 80%, quando a infecção é intensa antes do florescimento e do enchimento de grãos. A utilização de cultivares resistentes é a melhor estratégia de controle da ferrugem da folha. Porém, devido à variabilidade do patógeno, a resistência dos genótipos é superada em até três anos após o seu lançamento. The use of resistant cultivars is the best strategy to control leaf rust. However, due to the pathogen variability, genotype resistance is easily overcome within three years under field conditions. To defend against the pathogen infection, the plant triggers defense mechanisms, which aim to prevent the fungus from colonizing the host tissues. Such defense mechanisms may be associated with the expression of genes that have a role in encoding proteins involved in resistance. In this review, the importance of both the plant-pathogen interaction and the role of involved proteins is discussed. The main proteomic techniques to identify and quantify the different proteins expressed in plant cells are also presented. Triticum aestivum, Puccinia triticina, proteomics, resistance, infection.
