The perception of aggression by nurses: psychometric scale testing and derivation of a short instrument

Abstract: Patient aggression is a serious problem in psychiatric nursing. Nurses' attitudes towards aggression have been identified as mediating the choice of nursing interventions. To date, investigations are lacking which elucidate the stability of one of the few scales for measuring the attitude of aggression. This study aimed to investigate the test-retest stability of the Perception of Aggression Scale and to derive a shortened version. In order to test the reliability of the Perception of Aggression Scale items, t… Show more

“…Extensive reliability and modelling of the POAS has taken place with large samples of nurses. Cronbach alpha's of the two factors are reported as 0.69 and 0.67, and retest reliabilities of 0.77 and 0.76 (Needham et al, 2004). The Cronbach alpha for these two subscales in the current study were 0.70 and 0.73 respectively.…”

“…The 86‐item survey in the German language was comprised of psychometrically evaluated tools (Duxbury, ; Hahn et al, ; Hahn, Needham, Abderhalden, Duxbury, & Halfens, ; Needham, Abderhalden, Dassen, Haug, & Fischer, ) and items generated through a preparatory interview study (Heckemann et al, ). Detailed information on the factors, validity and reliability of the tools included in the survey, is available from the PERoPA project website (https://www.gesundheit.bfh.ch/de/forschung/pflege/projekte/aggression_im_gesundheitswesen/peropa_the_nurse_managers_perspective_englisch/tabs/instrument.html).…”
