“…A localization of Spc33 in the ER agrees with previous studies that indicate that the SPC is part of this organel or is derived thereof (Girbardt, 1958; 1961; Moore and McAlear, 1962; Bracker and Butler, 1963; Marchant and Wessels, 1973; Müller et al. , 1998; 1999; 2000; van Driel et al.…”

“…This and the fact that ER markers (van Driel et al. , 2008) and zinc‐iodine osmium tetroxide (Müller et al. , 1998; 1999; 2000) stain the SPC region suggest that the SPC is derived from this organelle.…”

“…Septal pores occur in the septate hyphae filaments of Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and some taxa of the Zygomycota, but pores of different taxa vary in size (25–500 nm) and with respect to other ultrastructural features. In the Ascomycota, septal pores are simple plasma membrane-lined channels ( Figure 1 G), while most taxa of the Basidiomycota (e.g., Agaricomycotina) form characteristic dolipores ( Figure 1 H) [ 69 , 71 ]. These are surrounded by barrel-shaped swellings of the septum wall and are associated on either side with septal pore caps (parenthesomes) derived from the ER.…”

“…One such example of morphologically convergent traits is fungal septal pore caps (SPCs), which are involved in the mycelia's complex cell-to-cell communication (Jedd, 2011;Nguyen et al, 2017). It was suggested that SPCs were newly derived from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) because SPCs were stained by some ER-targeting markers (van Driel et al, 2008;Müller et al, 1999) and the base of SPCs are connected to the ER (Moore, 1975;Müller et al, 1998aMüller et al, , 2000. Thus, understanding the genetic background of SPC provides fundamental insight into the origin of multicellularization in fungi and the mechanism of organelle specialization of SPC.…”
