The performance of the bolometer array and readout system during the 2012/2013 flight of the E and B experiment (EBEX)

Abstract: EBEX is a balloon-borne telescope designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. During its eleven day science flight in the Austral Summer of 2012, it operated 955 spider-web transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers separated into bands at 150, 250 and 410 GHz. This is the first time that an array of TES bolometers has been used on a balloon platform to conduct science observations. Polarization sensitivity was provided by a wire grid and continuously rotating half-wave plat… Show more

“…An all-sky cosmic variance-limited measurement to much smaller scales is feasible with current technology and several experimental designs have been proposed [330,332,333]. Although none of the former have been selected for funding to date, ground based and sub-orbital CMB polarisation measurements (which either by themselves [334] or taken in combination [335][336][337][338][339][340][341][342][343][344][345][346][347][348], promise almost full sky coverage) remain one of the most promising future avenues for the detection of features, especially on the largest scales.…”

“…Although subsequent work has shown this signal to be attributable to polarized dust emission [12,13], inclusion of the BICEP2 data gives the strongest upper bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio [14], so we have crossed the critical threshold at which the tensor power spectrum is more accurately constrained by polarization data than by temperature data. No one knows if the tensor signal is large enough to be resolved with current technology but many increasingly sensitive polarization experiments are planned, under way or actually analysing data, including POLARBEAR2 [15], PIPER [16], SPIDER [17], BICEP3 [18], and EBEX [19].…”

“…The EBEX 2013 flight marks the first balloon-borne operation of a monolithic array of kilopixel TES bolometers, the first implementation of a frequency multiplexing factor of 16 on any telescope, the first implementation of a 4 K continuously rotating AHWP, and the first use of a 4 K superconducting magnetic bearing for astrophysical applications. 7…”
