The Photoionization Dynamics, Electronic Spectroscopy, and Excited State Photochemistry of AlCO and AlOC

Abstract: The high cosmic abundance of carbon monoxide (CO) and the ubiquitous nature of aluminum-coated dust grains sets the stage for the production of weakly bound triatomic molecules AlCO (X 2Π) and AlOC (X 2Π) in circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. Following desorption of cold AlCO and AlOC from the dust grain surface, incoming stellar radiation in the 2–9 eV wavelength range (visible to vacuum ultraviolet) will drive various photochemical processes. Ionization to the singlet cation state will cause an immedi… Show more

“…This Al + C/O chemistry has been more extensively explored than Al reactions involving nitrogen. Nitrogen, of course, is more abundant in the earth’s atmosphere, but reactive nitrogen atoms are present in certain regions at high-enough concentrations to make a difference in aluminum chemistry.…”

“…To explore the photochemistry of new ABMs, the stability, lowest excited states, and their topology along the stretching and bending coordinates are discussed here. The significance of the molecular systems [Al, C, O], [Al, S, O], and [Al, S, O 2 ] cannot be understated, as they play pivotal roles as intermediate complexes in the reaction between aluminum (Al) and polluting species such as sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). These reactions are particularly relevant in the context of volcanic emissions and proposed climate change geoengineering solutions.…”
