The position and morphometry of the fovea capitis femoris in computed tomography of the hip

Abstract: The femoral neck axis in the transverse plane always crosses the anterior aspect of the fovea. Its position is unrelated to the angular geometry of the proximal femur, but related to the femoral head size. It is found to be relatively larger in women.

“…Some studies evaluating FCF dimensions have measured the largest diameter of the FCF (TL-FCF) in axial and coronal sections on computed tomography or magnetic resonance images (MRI) [11,12,16]. In asymptomatic volunteers, the width of FCF found by Bensler et al did not contain similar results to our ndings.…”

“…In addition, an excess of nutrient foramina reduces the likelihood of developing osteonecrosis [6]. Hip dysplasia and osteoarthrosis have been related to modi cations in the morphometric structure and location of the FCF in the hip joint [10][11][12]. As the femoral head is supplied by vessels that travel through the FCF, the features of the anatomical structures on the head of the femur are considered potential factors in avascular necrosis.…”

“…Precise information about the position of the fovea is important for radiological evaluation of the images, and to assist diagnostic hip arthroscopic, especially in patients with absent or completely ruptured LHOF (11). Localization of the fovea could provide useful information for the identification of the rotational position of the head of the femur in the fixation approach in femoral neck fractures (5,18).…”

“…The correct position of the lag screw was ensured (Baumgaertner et al, 1995;Kuzyk et al, 2012). Its position was evaluated on AP and axial radiographs by calculating the distance between the intersection of the long axis of the neck with the femoral head cortex on both projections (Ceynowa et al, 2019) and the similar intersection of the long axis of the screw (Lenich et al, 2011).…”
