The Earth's surface morphology, in an abiotic context, is a consequence of major forcings such as tectonic uplift, erosion, sediment transport, and climate. Recently, however, it has become essential for the geomorphological community to also take into account biota as a geomorphological agent that has a role in shaping the landscape, even if at a different scale and magnitude from that of geology. Although the modem literature is flourishing on the impacts of vegetation on geomorphic processes, the study of anthropogenic pressures on geomorphology is still in its early stages. Topography emerges as a result of natural driving forces, but some human activities (such as mining, agricultural practices and the construction of road networks) directly or indirectly move large quantities of soil, which leave dear topographic signatures embedded on the Earth's morphology. These signatures can cause drastic changes to the geomorphological organization of the landscape, with direct consequences on Earth surface processes. This review provides an overview of the recent literature on the role of humans as a geological agent in shaping the morphology of the landscape. We explore different contexts that are significantly characterized by anthropogenic topographic signatures: landscapes affected by mining activities, road networks and agricultural practices. We underline the main characteristics of those landscapes and the implications of human impacts on Earth surface processes. The final section considers future challenges wherein we explore recent novelties and trials in the concept of anthropogenic geomorphology. Herein, we focus on the role of high-resolution topographic and remote-sensing technologies. The reconstruction or identification of artificial or anthropogenic topographies provides a mechanism for quantifying anthropogenic changes to landscape systems. This study may allow an improved understanding and targeted mitigation of the processes driving geomorphic changes during anthropogenic development and help guide future research directions for development-based watershed studies. Human society is deeply affecting the environment with consequences on the landscape. Therefore, establishing improved management measures that consider the Earth's rapidly changing systems is fundamental. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Groundwater resources of karst aquifers within Circum-Mediterranean are a vital natural resource, which have been exploited since the dawn of the Mediterranean civilization. In Greece, carbonate formations are thought to be one of the most important sources for various water uses, that are vital for the country's economy and development, that is agriculture and water supply. In most cases, they are considered as integral parts of some of the most strategic hydrosystems in Greece, containing surface water and groundwater resources that secure water supply for several anthropogenic activities. This paper provides a review of different aquifer types in Greece (granular and karstic), focusing on karst hydrosystems. It presents their spatial distribution throughout the entire Greek territory, and describes the most important environmental stresses upon them, while it analyzes their importance and role to the country's water supply. Finally, this study analyzes the river basin of (Central Greece), used as a reference hydrosystem, to prove the ample importance of karst reservoirs in Greece.

The simultaneous impact of climate change and human activities on soil organic carbon content (SOC) in peatlands is insufficiently recognized, especially in relation to peatlands affected by open‐pit lignite mining. Given their importance in climate change feedback loops, long‐term observations of SOC changes in peatlands are essential. The aim of the study was to determine recent changes in the properties and SOC content/stock of agro‐managed fen peatlands located adjacent to open‐pit lignite mines. We studied two soil layers (0–20 and 20–40 cm) within 12 sampling plots in the Grójec Valley (Central Poland). Soil sample collection and field measurements took place in 2005 and again in 2015. The largest negative changes in soil properties (e.g. SOC content drop from 208 to 318 g kg−1 in 2005 to 125–263 g kg−1 in 2015 and SOC stock decrease from 12.1–16.2 kg m−2 in 2005 to 9.22–14.5 kg m−2 in 2015), as well as the largest variability of watertable level were recorded in the northern part of the study area, affected by long‐term lignite mining (1982–2009). While such a strong changes were not observed in the plots from central and southern part of the valley (230–439 g kg−1 in 2005 and 228–396 g kg−1 in 2015; 11.5–29,2 kg m−2 in 2005 and 13.4–36.1 kg m−2, respectively). Our results showed that depletion of SOC content in lowland peatlands in the temperate climate zone (due to human activity and changeable weather conditions) will proceed unless we implement sustainable management practices or apply restoration plans at these sites.
