The Potential of OMICs Technologies for the Treatment of Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases

Abstract: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), such as inflammatory bowel diseases and inflammatory arthritis (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis), are marked by increasing worldwide incidence rates. Apart from irreversible damage of the affected tissue, the systemic nature of these diseases heightens the incidence of cardiovascular insults and colitis-associated neoplasia. Only 40–60% of patients respond to currently used standard-of-care immunotherapies. In addition to this limited long-term eff… Show more

“…In the emerging field of omics of sepsis, we believe that this review will provide an initial summary of the literature in the field as a resource and also encourage further studies (8,9,10,11). In particular, as sepsis is a complex process, proteomics provides a quantitative analysis of the protein changes that can help bridge the genotype-phenotype gap (12).…”

“…Immunotherapy cannot be stopped, since the restoration of immune function is impossible, and the control of inflammation must be addressed throughout the life course. Despite this, the proportion of patients who respond to the standard of care is 40–60% [ 109 ]. Increasing scientific evidence indicates that pharmacological therapy is more effective if a healthy diet accompanies it; so, it would be interesting to have the support of other professionals, such as nutritionists.…”

“…The incidence of IMIDs is growing in industrial societies; environmental changes combined with a genetic background trigger the development of IMIDs [4][5][6]. Recent evidence underpins the presence of shared common pathways among IMIDs [2,6,7], but knowledge of the immune factors that drive these chronic progressive diseases is still incomplete.…”
