The Practical Effect of a Diffraction‐Limited Image for Photogrammetry

Abstract: The smallest image patch produced by an optical unit at the focal plane of a camera can be appreciably larger than the size of pixels in the CCD used to record the image. This optical limit on spatial resolution, when taken into consideration together with the sensor's influence on image quality, should always be a part of any estimation made of the ground sample distance (GSD) attributed to a camera.
