The Pre-Depression Investigation of Cloud-Systems in the Tropics (PREDICT) Field Campaign: Perspectives of Early Career Scientists

Abstract: Early career scientists played crucial roles in the success of the PREDICT field campaign and, in turn, experienced unique career-development opportunities that will shape their research for years to come.

“…It has been postulated that the presence of a dynamically protected region of convection and vorticity comoving with a tropical wave could lead to an area of enhanced moisture favorable for cyclogenesis . Testing this hypothesis was addressed by the PREDICT experiment in the Caribbean and western Atlantic [Evans et al, 2012;. During PREDICT, airborne missions were flown to investigate the developing tropical cyclone environment before the disturbances reached tropical storm strength.…”

“…A tri-agency call at 1600 UTC, led on a revolving basis by forecasters from each group, provided a forum for all participants to view the day's forecast and flight plans. Similar meteorological information, including the pouch products, was used by all agencies (see companion paper by Evans et al 2012 for further details).…”

“…Real-time displays of rapidly refreshed images of convection and overshooting tops (OTs) along with lightning overlays provided critical support in this regard [for an example of the CIMSS OT product display please see Fig. 2, and also the companion paper (Evans et al 2012) for how the product can be useful to PREDICT scientific research]. The satellite data included key microwave images ( Fig.…”

“…E arly career scientists (ECSs) filled many science team roles and made significant contributions that were integral to the success of GRIP, just as they were to PREDICT (Evans et al 2012). These roles included forecasting, mission science, data management, and instrument operations.…”
