The prevalence and predictive factors of breast cancer screening among older Ghanaian women

Abstract: Background: Breast cancer cases are on the rise in Ghana, with older adult women being more at risk of the disease. However, there is a paucity of current studies on factors that predict breast cancer screening among older adult women using nationally representative data. “…In Indonesia, a significant number of women are diagnosed for breast cancer in the advanced stage of the disease due to lack of knowledge and awareness, insufficient social support, numerous psychosocial factors, and, often times, the socio-characteristics of breast cancer patients (Setyowibowo et al, 2017;Anwar et al, 2018;Solikhah et al, 2020). A large-scale study in Ghana found that the educational background of a breast cancer patient is significantly associated with breast cancer screening (Agyemang et al, 2020). Also, many previous studies in both developed and developing countries have demonstrated the followings as factors influencing the breast cancer screening practice, namely: individual and sociodemographic factors; limited access of health insurance; and ethnicity.…”

“…The American Cancer Society suggests commencing the BSE monthly throughout high school [4] since it is an important part of any adult woman's health regimen for early detection of the disease and to reduce mortality. However, Breast screening rates in Ghana seem to be generally low [3]. Several investigations conducted in different countries revealed that university students have a fair and good understanding of BSE; however, only a small number perform BSE regularly.…”

“…Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, the contributing factor to the rising prevalence includes a lack of knowledge and practices about possible causes and nonperformance of regular breast self-examinations [1][2][3]. Apart from being the most frequent cancer type in Ghana, the age of diagnosis might be as young as 14 years old [1].…”
