“…Compared with studies conducted in Asia, our percentages were slightly lower than those estimated by the Nagahama Study in Japan, with a prevalence of myopia in adults aged 34 to 80 years of 49.97% 21 , while in adults aged 20-40 years in Saudi Arabia, there was a reported prevalence of 48.7% 22 , both with a SE ≤ -0.50 D as the definition of myopia. In Europe, there was an estimation of an overall prevalence of 30.6% in adults aged 25 to 89 years according to a meta-analysis that included 15 studies conducted in various countries 23 .…”

“…In this study, contrary to the results of previous studies in north and northeastern Iran (14,21,23) and similar to the study conducted in central Iran (22), the prevalence of myopia was higher than hyperopia (25.7%). Several studies in Myanmar (51%), Japan (41.8%), and Saudi Arabia (48.7%) reported that the prevalence of myopia in people aged 40 and over was higher than in the present study (13,24,25). However, most conceptually similar studies to date have reported an equal or lower prevalence of myopia.…”

“…Despite the significant increase in myopia prevalence worldwide, the prevalence varies across populations of different regions and ethnicities. In Saudi Arabia, studies reported a myopia prevalence of 49% among adults in the Riyadh region [6] , and a similar prevalence was reported in adults in the eastern region of the country [7] . Few cross-sectional studies examined the prevalence of myopia among children in Saudi Arabia and found that the prevalence of uncorrected myopia varied between 4% and 6% [8][9] .…”
