The prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome/Willis-ekbom disease (RLS/WED) in the third trimester of pregnancy: a systematic review

Abstract: Background: RLS is known as one of the most common movement disorders during pregnancy, which is most aggravated in the third trimester of pregnancy and can affect up to one-third of pregnant women. This study intends to determine the total prevalence of RLS in the third trimester of pregnancy through a systematic review. Methods: The present study was conducted via meta-analysis method up to 2019. The papers related to the subject of interest were obtained through searching in SID, MagIran, IranDoc, Scopus, E… Show more

“…Restless leg syndrome has its pathogenesis in brain, and reduced brain iron and alterations in CNS dopaminergic systems are believed to play a part. [10][11][12] The central role of brain iron deficiency in pathogenesis is supported by several lines of evidence, such as association of iron deficiency with an increased prevalence of RLS, 13 relationship of lower serum ferritin levels with increased severity of RLS, 14 association of RLS with other iron-deficient states such as pregnancy, 15 chronic kidney disease, 16 chronic liver disease, 4 and symptomatic relief with the use of iron supplements. 17 Iron homeostasis is organ-specific, and people may have iron deficiency in the brain even in presence of normal 18 or increased serum iron levels.…”

“…RLS has a higher prevalence among women than men ( Manconi et al, 2012 ). Hormonal differences between men and women are unlikely to account for this difference ( Ghorayeb et al, 2008 ) but might, instead, be partly due to pregnancy ( Pantaleo et al, 2010 ), as a high prevalence of RLS occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy ( Darvishi et al, 2020 ). Furthermore, even though RLS regularly resolves upon delivery, women who develop RLS symptoms during pregnancy are, compared to nulliparous women, up to four times more susceptible to developing RLS later in life ( Cesnik et al, 2010 ; Earley et al, 2014 ).…”
