The problem teacher.

Abstract

The Abnormal Teacher Personality Teachers, in general, are not abnormal people. Yet, as is typical of all normal people, thev are marked by their profession. The businessman who does not act like a businessman, the doctor who does not act like a doctor, and the lawyer who does not act like a lawyer seem the real abnormal personalities. We must expect a teacher to act like a teacher. People are apt to be categorized not so much by race, nationality, or creed as they are by occupations. An Indian policeman in Bombay, a cockney constable in London, and an Irish-American cop in New York all have similar behavior patterns. A school teacher from New York will behave very much like one from Alviso, California. Hence we must concede the fact that the teaching profession molds teachers into an occupational personality type. But the pedagogue personality is not the antisocial, timid, frustrated, and prudish one portrayed by the caricaturist or the disciples of Washington Irving. Rather the teacher personality is abnormal in that it is extrasocial. Daily human-relations experiences with children and adults have given teachers an uncanny ability for leadership and have imbued them with a compulsion to take such leadership. The teacher's habit of assuming leadership, no matter what the situation, is what causes people to resent her behavior occasionally.
