Objectives: In this study, we aim to determine the prevalence of anxiety and evaluate its relationship with academic performance in a vocational school of health services students, which causes significant disability and loss of labor and is frequently seen with mood disorders in the society. Methods: A sample was not selected for the research, it was aimed to reach all students. Of the 1093 students who are attending the school, 849 (77.7%) students participated in the study. In order to determine the level of anxiety in students, a questionnaire form consisting of the Beck Anxiety Inventory and descriptive features were applied by the online survey method. Results: Of the students; 80.1% are female, 98.1% are single, 57.1% are in their first year, and the average age is 20.25 ± 1.81. The total scale score was found 9.42 ± 8.65 and it was 9.90 ± 8.69 for female students and 7.49 ± 8.24 for male students. Variable levels of anxiety were detected in 38.8% of the participants. There was no statistically significant relation found between anxiety level and academic performance, but both anxiety levels and academic performances were affected by the gender of participants. Conclusions: Making psychological evaluations of students while they are starting their higher education and checking their statuses periodically using standard self-report tools by using technological instruments; would make it possible to make necessary interventions by noticing the situations that may adversely affect their academic success, social life, mental and cognitive development in the early stages.

Erzurum il merkezinde lise öğrencilerinde Beck depresyon Ölçeği kullanılarak yapılan bir çalışmada ise orta ve ağır depresyon düzeyi %47,11 olarak tespit edilmiş ki buna hafif düzeyler de eklenince oranın %72,73'e çıktığı görülmüştür.…”

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the frequency of depressive signs and the sociodemographic features among the children of health workers who work under harsh conditions and immense stress. Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in the Province of Batman, Turkey, between June 15 and July 17, 2014. The study included 106 health workers who had children aged 6-17 years and volunteered to complete the questionnaire. The participants filled out the sociodemographic data form alone and completed the depression scale for children (DSC) together with their children. Data was evaluated statistically. Results: All but one child had a score of >19 on the DSC (99.1%). No correlation was found between the scores of the children and the department of their parents (r=0.050, p=0.621) and shiftwork (r=0.178, p=0.071), history of depression in their parents (r=0.100, p=0.315), number of siblings in the family (r=0.001, p=0.994), and the presence of chronic diseases in the children (r=0.138, p=0.162). The scores were higher in the children of female health workers compared to those of male health workers (p=0.027). Conclusion: High CDS scores in the children of health workers is a critical issue and the reason for this occurrence may be multifactorial. Further surveys should be conducted to define the measures to be taken.

The relationships between self-handicapping tendency and narcissistic personality traits, anxiety sensitivity, social support, academic achievementObjective: Successful experiences in life increase motivation of individuals and support their efficacy perceptions, whereas unsuccessful experiences reduce their motivations. Individuals who generally avoid failures can sometimes prefer to be unsuccessful as a self-handicapping strategy. The basic psychological reason underlying this situation is individual's effort to protect him/herself through attributing reasons of failure to external factors. The main aim of this study is to examine relationships between self-destroying tendency and narcissistic personality traits, anxiety sensitivity, perceived social support and academic achievement. In this context, expression of "narcissistic personality traits, anxiety sensitivity, social support and academic achievement explain self-handicapping tendency significantly" is the main hypothesis of the study. Methods: Sample size consists of 483 university students (female=351 [72.7%]); male=132 [27.3%]). The mean age was 21.25±3.44 years. The data collection tools were Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3, Self-handicapping Scale, Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale and the Personal Information Form. Results: Established regression model explained 31% of total variance in self-handicapping tendencies (F [9;482]=25.16, p<0.01). As narcissistic personality inventory subscales, authority (ß=0.08, p<0.05), self-sufficiency (ß=-0.18, p<0.01) and entitlement (ß=0.11, p<0.01) contributed to regression model significantly, while contribution of superiority (ß=-0.02, p>0.05), exhibitionism (ß=-0.01, p>0.05) and exploitation (ß=-0.03, p>0.05) was not significant. Additionally, anxiety sensitivity (ß=0.39, p<0.01), perceived social support (ß=-0.11, p<0.01) and academic achievement (ß=-0.19, p<0.01) had significant contributions to the model. Conclusions: Self-handicapping is explained significantly by anxiety sensitivity, perceived social support, academic achievement and subscales of narcissism, such as authority, self-sufficiency and entitlement.
