The prognostic value of elevated neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio for cardiac surgery‐associated acute kidney injury: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Background Patients undergoing cardiac surgery are at significant risk of developing postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI). Neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a widely available inflammatory biomarker which may be of prognostic value in this setting. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis of studies reporting associations between perioperative NLR with postoperative AKI. We searched Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library, without language restriction, from inception to May 2022 for re… Show more

“…The importance of renal functions in cardiovascular diseases and patients undergoing open heart surgery has been shown by numerous studies 13 . The relationship between low GFR level and the development of surgical reexploration in our own patient population shows how important preoperative renal function evaluation is.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that preoperative NLR elevation is determinative for both postoperative AKI and RRT requirements. [31] However, in patients receiving CABG, a high preoperative NLR was linked to poor baseline renal function. [32] Similar to NLR, preoperative PLR can be used as an independent indicator of AKI following cardiac surgery.…”

“…An emerging field of research aims to inform the diagnosis and prognosis of surgical and inflammatory disease through the investigation of hematological indices [6][7][8][9][10] . The neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are promising biomarkers of systemic inflammation [11][12][13][14] and correlate with disease activity in other inflammatory arthritidies 15 . Furthermore, red cell distribution width (RDW), a measure of heterogeneity in red cell sizes, has also been associated with disease activity in inflammatory arthritis 16 .…”
