Influences on Greenways Usage for Active Transportation: A Systematic Review

Since the inception of the greenways concept, transportation has been one of its inherent qualities. Nevertheless, journal articles from the past three decades reported negligible active transportation (AT) impact of many greenway investments worldwide. Simultaneously, an international empirical evidence base of greenways usage for AT has not yet been established. Therefore, this research aimed to identify and analyze the influences on greenways usage for AT via a systematic review of published peer-reviewed journal articles from 1991 until 2021. The review used protocols of the PRISMA Statement in reporting and meta-analysis. Via two levels of screening criteria, results identified 162 articles that focused on greenway users and 27 (out of 162) articles that had AT as a main part of their study. The review specified patterns in the characteristics, perceptions, and travel behaviors of active commuters via greenways, which differed from other user types. Differences in use were also affected by weather and temporal factors, greenways’ location and characteristics, and contextual factors. A discussion of the findings identified four study types of greenway usage, highlighted methodological concerns of systematic reviews in this field, characterized transportation-led greenways, proposed a conceptual framework that illustrates where and when greenways would be considered routes for daily commutes, and suggested future work directions. These results improve the understanding of greenways usage, thereby informing their planning, design, and management to maximize their potential.

Contemporary urban planning models include urban trail paths. These are paths that create active transportation corridors within a city’s built environment, providing more sustainable travel, especially for short trips. The benefits of their use are plentiful, including improvements in commuters’ health, reductions in energy footprint, and socio-economic benefits for the entire society. In modern urban planning approaches such as the “15-minute city”, urban trail paths serve as connectors, facilitating access to amenities beyond the close-proximity concept of a “neighborhood”. They act as a way of connecting residents to other 15-minute cities/neighborhoods via safe routes, reducing extensive car use. Micromobility constitutes a novel approach to short trips with proven results. This paper explores the possibility of introducing micromobility as a means of connecting 15-minute cities/neighborhoods through urban trail paths. Through a literature review, an analysis is conducted of the opportunities arising from the introduction of micromobility, as well as on the factors influencing its sustained use in urban mobility and the public realm.

The subject of the paper is the street, seen as a structuring and emblematic element of urban settlement. The topic is addressed from the lens of regenerative design, whose underlying whole-system, multi-scalar, and dynamic approach can find urban connections to be a fruitful field of experimentation from the perspective of the post-automobile city. The first part of the paper traces the stages of the transport mechanization process and related impacts on urban patterns, emphasizing the voices critical of reducing streets to mere traffic channels that have accompanied it, until the sustainability discourse led to a general rethinking of how mobility should be planned in cities. The second part of the paper reviews alternative urban visions to the still prevailing car-oriented model, which re-actualize the idea of the street as a multifunctional space, providing social and environmental ‘returns’ in addition to its role as a transport infrastructure. The notion of the street as a ‘space of potential’ is then developed through an inductive classification of regenerative actions at different scales, both material and immaterial, as well as permanent and temporary, thus providing a unifying conceptual framework for further research and practical applications in the fields of urban design and sustainable mobility.
