The promoting effect of a dicyanamide based ionic liquid in the selective hydrogenation of citral

Abstract: Conventional supported heterogeneous palladium catalysts in combination with a dicyanamide based ionic liquid are highly active with excellent selectivity in enabling the one-pot synthesis of citronellal through citral hydrogenation.

“…The similar Solid Catalyst with Ionic Liquid Layer (SCILL) concept consists of a bulk catalyst impregnated with a thin ionic liquid layer [36]. Here, the Supported Ionic Liquid Catalyst (SILCA) concept is employed, where a support is impregnated with metal species and covered with the ionic liquid [37][38][39][40][41][42]. In the current work, a Pd-impregnated porous glass support was employed as catalyst (Pd/TP) and the ionic liquids were added to the reaction mixture, so that the SILCA species were formed in situ.…”

“…In the case of citral hydrogenation, similar trends were observed. The selectivity towards citronellal obtained using [44] also achieved the selective hydrogenation of citral to citronellal using 10 % (3) at 50 °C and 1.0 MPa H 2 . In the IL-free system 100 % conversion and 41 % selectivity towards the desired product was obtained.…”
