The Properties of the Ulcinj Peloid make it Unique Biochemical Laboratory Required for the Treatment of Problematic Skin and Health Care

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties of peloid, its mineralogical composition and its antimicrobial activity, including the presence of algae, with the aim of considering its dermo-cosmetic application, such as anti-skin aging and treatment. Physicochemical analysis showed that peloid from Ulcinj coast, contains minerals, necessary for smooth performance of skin functions, as well as, the whole body. A studied peloid sample showed significant antimicrobial activity of Candida… Show more

“…The content of heavy metals is below the standard values adopted by the US EPA (EPA, 2012 ). A comparative analysis of the composition of heavy metals shows that the peloids of Western Kazakhstan have mostly similar content of manganese, zinc, copper, lead, and cadmium with sapropels from Romanian saline lakes (Baricz et al, 2021 ), as well as zinc and lead with peloids from Ulcinj coast, Montenegro (Potpara et al, 2017 ), and San Diego de los Baños Thermal Center, Cuba (Suárez Muñoz et al, 2015 ). Comparing the available data from other countries, the mud of Southern and Western Kazakhstan has a low copper content; however, it has a high cadmium content.…”

“…Sulfate ions, together with chloride ions and sodium ions, have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect in the treatment of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis (Tsoureli-Nikita et al, 2002). It is known that sodium ions increase skin permeability, promote moisture retention, activate the ion transport system through the cell membrane, and participate in the elimination of toxins and cell stimulation (Potpara, 2017). Ammonium salts have a keratolytic effect of an anti-allergic and antiinflammatory nature, reducing flaking and facilitating the course of skin diseases such as psoriasis, dermatitis (eczema), etc.…”

“…The chemical composition of natural muds, their physical properties, as well as the therapeutic effect are studied by researchers in different countries. A comprehensive physical and chemical study of mud was described, including the determination of pH, granulometry, chemical, and mineralogical composition, organic matter in Romania (Baricz et al, 2021), in Montenegro (Potpara et al, 2017), in Turkey (Odabasi et al, 2007), in Cuba (Martínez-Villegas et al, 2020. The factors influencing the formation of the chemical composition and genesis of silt mud include the salt composition of the brine of the reservoir, soil, and organic matter of plant and animal origin.…”

“…Although the official guidelines for the treatment of patients suffering from acne (Corcoran et al, 2021) do not recognize the importance of cosmeutics such as those used in our study, the results of the application of Peloderm in our subjects are promising. The assumed mechanism of action of the preparation is reduced secretion of sebum and the formation of comedones and acne, as well as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. All the mentioned effects can be attributed to the chemical ingredients of peloids (Potpara et al, 2017) and extracts of medicinal plants. The presence of silicate algae of the genus Pinullaria in the Ulcinj peloid can be an explanation for the photoprotective effect of Peloderm.I n addition, the presence of bioactive molecules (pantothenic acid, alginic acid, methionine, histidine) in algae contributes to the regulation of moisture and the improvement of epithelization of rough, dry and wrinkled skin (Berthon et al, 2017).…”

“…The coast of the Adriatic Sea is rich in peloids, and the object of our interest is the peloid from Ulcinj (south of Montenegro). Its composition, physico-chemical characteristics, antimicrobial activity and other important characteristics were the subject of our previous research (Potpara et al, 2017).…”
