The Prospects of Blue Economy to Promote Bangladesh into a Middle-Income Country

Abstract: This paper draws attention to the prospects of sea-based economy to promote Bangladesh in a middle-income country through the sustainable use of marine resources. About three-fourths of the earth is covered by the seas. It plays the vital role in two important functions from ancient time known as the means of communication and the source of huge living and non-living natural resources. At present, the countries are becoming very much concerned about their marine resources to resolve many of the present and fut… Show more

“…Hossain et al (2015) also reported that 28.25, 18.31 and 17.79% vigour index were increased over control when wheat seeds of Kanchon variety were treated with BAU-Biofungicide (2.5%), Bavistin (0.1%) and garlic (1%), respectively at 10 days after sowing. This result is in accordance with the findings of Hasan et al (2005) and Chowdhury et al (2005). Plant extracts, BAU-Biofungicide and fungicides on health status of rice seeds were evaluated by standard blotter incubation test and the seeds were found to be associated with 9 different seed borne fungi viz., Alternaria padwickii, Alternaria tenuis, B. oryzae, Curvularia lunata, Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium oxysporum, Sarocladium oryzae, Trichoderma harzianum and Penicillium sp.…”

“…Whilst the application of programmes, such as "Ship to Shore Rights" may be appropriate for cases of exploitation noted in the smaller formalized processing sector in Bangladesh (see Jensen 2013;Brown et al 2019), they may not be applicable for those in more informal, and remote locations which rely on the water for fish, and the mangrove forest for processing space. This is something that may change in the future as Bangladesh pushes towards a "Blue Economy" model (Hasan et al 2018), but is unlikely to be successful in the current informal economy. As a result of the informal fisheries sector, a case can be made for a more integrated method of training provision for conservationists who are likely to come into primary contact with those who may be subjected to modern slavery, as proposed in other forestry sectors where modern slavery and environmental degradation intersect .…”

“…It is estimated that only 1.29 lakh m 3 and 5294 ha are under the cage and pen culture system. For example, the community-based fisheries management, i.e., the Daudkandi model of community floodplain aquaculture [54,55], is expected to improve fisher access, livelihoods, and the sustainability of the fisheries sector. Co-management of natural wetlands could be another option to protect and increase the biodiversity and livelihood of the dependent community [9].…”
