“…Alves et al [ 247 ] studied the effect of the consumption of a lectin isolated from Bryothamnion seaforthii on STZ induced diabetic rats, in which they observed an increase in the activity of GPx and plasmatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) in comparison with the control counterpart. Likewise, the consumption of an extract from the alga Acanthophora spicifera , rich in flavonoids, increased SOD and catalase (CAT) activities in the liver and kidney, whereas reducing MDA levels in heart, liver, and kidney of diabetic Wistar rats [ 248 ]. These polyphenols are widely known for their ability to eliminate free radicals, which would block the oxidative damage of diabetes and would justify the results found.…”

“…However, HbA1c decreased concomitantly with glycaemia in diabetic rats in the HFD-Alg and HFD-Ext groups compared with the HFD group, possibly due to the action of polyphenols and flavonoids contained in the alga. Vuppalapati et al (2016) reported that flavonoids from the red seaweed Acanthophora spicifera control hyperglycemia by reducing blood glucose levels in diabetic rats and that the administration of the flavonoid-rich fraction reduces HbA1c levels.…”

“…From the study of Ezeonu et al (2017) it was also found that flavonoid-rich fraction of methanol extract of Jatropha tanjorensis leaves contains anti-oxidants which scavenged the CCl 4 -induced free radical species. Studies by Vuppalapati et al (2016) showed that the flavonoid-rich fraction of Acanthophora specifera also caused an overall improvement in haemoglobin level and possesses anti-oxidative properties. The non-oxidative effects of LAFRF on OxyHb and the increased absorbance maxima of the absorption spectrum for the treated OxyHb test groups has many biological significances.…”
