This study examined the growth, gut morphology and occurrence of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) fed diets supplemented with essential oil (EO) extracted from Aloysia triphylla (0control, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mL EO per kg of diet) for 60 days. The group fed 2.0 mL EO per kg of diet showed better results after 60 days in growth, body weight, weight gain and specific growth rate. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses in the intestine demonstrated that height of folds was significantly higher in the control group and 0.25 mL EO compared to those fed 0.5 mL EO per kg of diet. There was a significant increase in the number of folds in fish fed 1.0 and 2.0 mL EO per kg of diet compared to control group. The enterocyte height was significantly lower in those fed 1.0 mL of EO group compared with 0.25 mL of EO per kg of diet. The number of cells that reacted to cholecystokinin and neuropeptide Y did not differ between groups. The addition of 2.0 mL EO per kg of diet increases silver catfish growth, and consequently, its use is recommended as a feed additive.

Antihypertensive and antidiabetic effects of stevia, Stevia rebaudiana (Asteraceae), have been demonstrated in several human and animal models. The current study aims to define stevia's role in modifying the electrophysiological and mechanical properties of cardiomyocytes, blood vessels, and gastrointestinal smooth muscle. Tissues from thoracic aorta, mesenteric arteries, ileum, and left ventricular papillary muscles were excised from 8-week-old healthy Wistar rats. The effects of stevia (1 × 10-9 M to 1 × 10-4 M) were measured on these tissues. Stevia's effects in the presence of verapamil, 4-AP, and L-NAME were also assessed. In cardiomyocytes, stevia attenuated the force of contraction, decreased the average peak amplitude, and shortened the repolarisation phase of action potential - repolarisation phase of action potential20 by 25 %, repolarisation phase of action potential50 by 34 %, and repolarisation phase of action potential90 by 36 %. Stevia caused relaxation of aortic tissues which was significantly potentiated in the presence of verapamil. In mesenteric arteries, incubation with L-NAME failed to block stevia-induced relaxation indicating the mechanism of action may not be fully via nitric oxide-dependent pathways. Stevia concentration-dependently reduced electrical field stimulated and carbachol-induced contractions in the isolated ileum. This study is the first to show the effectiveness of stevia in reducing cardiac action potential duration at 20 %, 50 %, and 90 % of repolarisation. Stevia also showed beneficial modulatory effects on cardiovascular and gastrointestinal tissues via calcium channel antagonism, activation of the M2 muscarinic receptor function, and enhanced nitric oxide release.

Histamine-supplemented fishmeal was reported to cause gastric lesions, abnormalities or distended stomachs in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; Watanabe et al 1987;Fairgrieve et al 1994;Shiozaki et al 2004). Fairgrieve et al did not find any effect of histamine (2000 mg kg )1 ) on feed intake or growth but acknowledged that the 16-week trial period may not have been sufficient for their development.…”

Feed nutritional quality impacts on the performance of aquacultured species. This study was undertaken to assess the consequences of existing postharvest handling practices on nutritional quality of local baitfish (Australian sardines, Sardinops sagax and redbait, Emmelichthys nitidus nitidus) used to feed farmed southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii). Controlled experiments were then undertaken to determine the most appropriate postharvest treatments to maintain baitfish nutritional quality, assessed through measurement of vitamins C and E, histamine, K value and TBARS. During frozen storage (−18 °C) vitamins and fish freshness decreased significantly and rancidity increased; after approximately 3 months baitfish were of questionable utility, particularly as a source of antioxidants. On‐land freezing method [i.e. block or individually quick frozen (IQF)] affected vitamin E loss with IQF sardines losing vitamin E faster than block‐frozen baitfish. Block‐frozen baitfish, particularly sardines, should be thawed in seawater, not air or freshwater, to minimize vitamin losses. Thawing time should be no more than 2 days, and baitfish storage less than 3 months. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) correlated well with remaining vitamin E, indicating its usefulness as an indicator of antioxidant status. TBARS analysis is methodologically simpler, faster and cheaper than that for vitamins, and is therefore recommended for determination of baitfish nutritional quality.
