The Psychosocial Challenges Facing Multi Drug Resistance Tuberculosis Patients: A Qualitative Study

Abstract: Background: The treatment for MDR-TB characterized by rigorous treatment regimen for long duration, higher incidence of adverse side effects, lower cure rate, and high treatment costs. “…Available data reveals that between 36,000 and 44,000 MDR-TB cases were reported in the AFRO Region in 2016 and of these, 15% of new MDR-TB patients were found to have RR [3]. Empirical evidence indicates that DR-TB is a multifaceted illness with expensive treatment regimens, toxic medications and long duration of treatment creating a substantial financial burden on the health system [10,11]. Consequently, socioeconomic status, job loss, overpopulation, poor hygiene, immunocompromising illnesses and malnourishment have been identified as risk factors that influence this disease burden hence it is commonly referred to as the disease of the poor [12].…”
