Abstract:A literature review is presented the phenomenon of “the pulse oximetry gap”, including its definition, causes, and clinical significance. The history of pulse oximetry, methods for determining the main functional and dysfunctional derivatives of hemoglobin, physical and methodological principles for determining the functional and fractional saturation of hemoglobin with oxygen are considered in detail.
