The R.E.N.A.L. Nephrometry Score: A Comprehensive Standardized System for Quantitating Renal Tumor Size, Location and Depth

Abstract: Standardized reporting of renal tumor size, location and depth is essential for decision making and effective comparisons. The R.E.N.A.L. Nephrometry Score is a reproducible standardized classification system that quantitates the salient anatomy of renal masses. This novel approach for the systematic characterization of renal tumors provides a tool for meaningful comparisons of renal masses in clinical practice and in the urological literature.

“…Several methods of quantifying these tumours have been proposed as an objective means of pre-operative assessment and will play an increasing role in the future as urologists carefully weigh the risks and benefits of treatment decisions for SRMs. [73][74][75][76] …”

“…For each patient, we registered demographic data and co-morbidities classified according to Charlson's co-morbidity index (CCI) (11)). Radiological tumour size (according to Computed Tomography scan, CT-scan), side and location were considered and lesions were classified according to RENAL nephrometry score (12) and PADUA score (9). Peri-operative, histopathological data and post-operative complications (classified according to Clavien's System (13)) were also recorded.…”

“…Renal cyst data were assessed according to cyst side (right or left), location (upper, mid or lower pole), characteristics (Bosniak classification 1, 2, or 2f), and exophytic degree which was stratified using the RENAL nephrometry score, as described by Kutikov and Uzzo [9] . According to their definitions, renal tumors that are ≥ 50% exophytic are assigned 1 point, tumors that are < 50% exophytic are assigned 2 points, while those that are entirely endophytic (encircled 360° by uninvolved renal parenchyma) are assigned 3 points.…”
