The recreational value of Lake McKenzie, Fraser Island: An application of the travel cost method

Abstract: Lake McKenzie is one of the most highly used and popular visitor destinations of all Fraser Island's natural sites, attracting 2,000 visitors a day in peak periods. Many consider this level of visitation to be unsustainable and the management authority is considering a range of management options. In assessing the alternatives it is useful to have some idea of the recreational value of the Lake under the current regime. This paper estimates this value using the travel cost method. Once adjustments for multiple… Show more

“…The travel cost method is a non-market procedure which seeks to place a value on recreational sites by using consumption behaviour in related markets (Fleming, Cook 2008). The underlying assumption in TCM is that the value of a place is equal to the costs respondents pay to use that place.…”

“…For more details about TCM see e. g. Fleming and Cook (2008); Willis and Garrod (2008); Brezovská and Holécy (2009). Further, for example Garod and Willis (1999); Šálka et al (2008); Trice and Wood (1986) To prepare the questionnaire, publications and case studies by foreign researchers were used (Bateman et al 2002;Peyron et al 2002;Carson, Hanemann 2005;Verbič, Slabe-Erker 2009).…”

“…One is the traditional Clawson-Knetsch model (Clawson and Knetsch, 1966). The other one is the gravity model (Hanley and Spash, 1993), which is often used in geography and transport studies to model commuting decisions (Fleming, 2008). The methodology of the traditional Clawson-Knetsch model can be read in numerous books (Cicchetti et al, 1973;Cesario and Knetsch, 1976;Willis, 1990Willis, , 1991Wang and Guo, 2000, etc).…”

“…The third approach is suggested by Hotelling (Ward and Beal 2000) and has been developed by Mendelsohn et al (1992). This method was considered to resolve the problem of the multi-destination, and the gravity model (Fleming and Cook, 2008) can be used as the travel cost model of the multi-destination. However, it was a shame that, in this survey, most of multi-destination tourists failed to write down both the names of multi-destination and the number of destinations clearly, so the tourists of MDT has to be excluded from the sample to avoid possible bias.…”
