The relation between BPM culture, BPM methods, and process performance: Evidence from quantitative field studies

Abstract: Business process management (BPM) research conceptualizes BPM culture as a type of organizational culture that supports BPM. No quantitative fieldwork has so far examined how such a supporting role manifests itself. We study the relationship between BPM culture, BPM methods, and process performance empirically. Our analysis of multiple survey data sets from

“…Mikalef et al, 2019b;Müller et al, 2018;). These and several other studies provide support to the idea that BDA resources need to be cultivated based on the type of process innovation capability they are targeted towards (Bouncken et al, 2018;Liu et al, 2018), as well as on contextual factors of the environment and the organisation (Schmiedel et al, 2019;Zelt et al, 2019). Such findings also are in line with a growing body of research in business process management literature which advocates a holistic perspective (Rosemann & De Bruin, 2005;Vom Brocke & Rosemann, 2010;Vom Brocke et al, 2014b).…”

“…In order to understand the long-term impacts of our identified and further factors on BPM culture, future research should use multiple points in time to assess the changes in BPM culture. In the context of public administration, Schmiedel et al (2020) suggest a direct impact of BPM methods on process performance that is only partially mediated by BPM culture and they argue that ''the adherence to respective techniques may leave no room for interpretation in contexts that follow strict operating procedures'' (p. 9). With the call for and adoption of more agile methods (Mergel et al 2020) in public administration and the ongoing digital transformation as witnessed in the public sector (Mergel et al 2019), we assume changes in process management and execution as well and -consequently -a changing role of BPM culture.…”

“…To address this issue, Schmiedel et al (2014) developed a framework of BPM culture and a standardized questionnaire to measure process-oriented culture in organizations, the BPM Culture Assessment. This instrument was tested with respondents from various industries such as information technology, banking & financial services and engineering & construction (Schmiedel et al 2014(Schmiedel et al , 2020. However, only a very small number of public sector respondents was included and the results were not analyzed with regard to the different sectors and contexts.…”

“…The theme of Process Management has been approached over the last decades from a perspective of linear and isolated to a more integrated and systemic view, assisting in the documentation, analysis, and improvement of business processes (Schmiedel et al, 2020). The concepts of "process" started to be part of the daily life of organizations, more specifically in the production sector, with the approaches of Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRP II) and factory layout (Aghabaghery et al, 2020).…”
