The Relation between Catheter Occlusion and Backflow during Intraparenchymal Cerebral Infusions

Abstract: Background/Aims: The distribution of infusate into the brain by convection-enhanced delivery can be affected by backflow along the catheter shaft. This work assesses the following: (1) whether tissue coring and occlusion of the catheter lumen occurs when an open end-port catheter is inserted, (2) whether there is a relationship between intracatheter pressure and backflow, and (3) whether catheter occlusion increases backflow. Methods: Freshly excised monkey brains were used to assess tissue coring and its corr… Show more

“…The simulations used in our work (see eg, Reference and earlier work referenced therein) generated hitting time samples, which have distributions computed in this paper, using the interpolations illustrated in this figure. See text for explanation of the slopes and intercepts as they are used in the inverse functions used to generate samples.…”

“…There are a multitude of methods for constructing such inverses, including those that match exactly the moments, easily obtained by successive differentiation of Equation , of the exact distribution. Our first implementation, which we have used extensively in our simulations with results that have been employed and tested in the complex heterogeneous environments of human patients with brain tumors, is described here, along with its error estimates. Before we do so, we discuss what error estimates we should use.…”

“…The use of probabilistic representations of the solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) has proved beneficial in many disciplines. We introduced this method in the study of fluid flow in porous media, more particularly, in biological tissue (e.g., References and other work referenced therein). The equations are either elliptic (the generalized Laplacian for inhomogeneous, anisotropic media) or, with time dependence, parabolic (the generalized diffusion equation with decay in such media), and the representations we used there were those that obtain for Dirichlet boundary conditions, where the value of the function to be solved for is given on the boundaries.…”
