OBJECTIVES:This study was conducted to determine the smoking habits of students of Atatürk Health College of Dicle University and the factors affecting them. MATERIAL AND METHODS:This cross-sectional study was performed between April 15 and 19, 2013. The selection of sampling was not conducted, since the whole study population included. Of 400 registered students, 326 (81.5%) were included. For collecting data, a questionnaire form designed by the researcher and Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence for determining the addiction level were applied. Percentage calculation was used for analyzing data, and chi-square test was employed for evaluating the relationship between the variables. RESULTS:The mean age of students was 21.4±2.3 years. Of them, 12.3% still smoked and 4% had quit. Of the smokers, 21.9% were males and 3.5% were females. Of the smokers, 67.5% stated that they tried to quit smoking and 72.5% replied that they thought of quitting smoking in the future. It was found that 47.5% of the students smoked 11-20 cigarettes a day. Of the students who still smoked and who had quitted, 47.2% had begun to smoke at the age of 10-15 years. As the cause for smoking initiation, 50.9% of the students revealed stress, difficulties, and sadness and 35.8% revealed the effect of a friend. A statistically significant difference was found between smoking habit and age, gender, class, and the presence of smokers among close friends (p<0.05). Moreover, it was detected that 35% of the students were over dependent. CONCLUSION:The prevalence of smoking among the youth is high. To decrease smoking prevalence, the reasons for smoking initiation should be investigated and some precautions should be taken before the university age, and they should be continued during the university education.

Young people constitute one fifth of world population. Youth’s reasons for smoking include looking for excitement, getting away from problems and meeting emotional and social needs. Smoking addiction is the most common addiction among young people especially due to the fact that cigarettes are sold legally, and it is known that one out of two young people who try smoking become addicted. Being knowledgeable about youth’s smoking addiction will also raise the effects of health education activities. This study aims to evaluate the smoking addiction levels of university students who smoke. Thus, it uses survey model- which is one of quantitative research methods. The study group was composed of 93 volunteering university students chosen randomly. The research data were collected with Fagerström Nicotine Addiction Test. The data collected were put to descriptive analysis (percentages, frequencies, etc.). Accordingly, it was found that the majority of the participants had low or very low levels of smoking addiction, and that male students were more addicted than female students. The reason most commonly mentioned by the participants for taking up smoking was the circle of friends, while the reason for why they were smoking was their feeling of relaxation.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse the knowledge and attitudes about smoking in young people between 16-20 years of age, who were both working and attending the Vocational Education Centre.Methods: This study was conducted with high school students at the Vocational Education Centre. The socio-demographic questionnaire and the Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND) were applied to the students using a face-to-face interview technique. Secondly, interactive educations on smoking-free life and smoking-related diseases were given. At last, CO (carbon monoxide) levels and respiratory functions were evaluated.Results: Of the students 92.9% were males, 37.4% were 16 years, 35.8% were 17 years and 26.9% were 18-20 years old. Among 46.9% of smokers, 75.8% started smoking before 15 years of age, 86.1% were living with smokers. While 70.5% of smokers smoked more than 10 cigarettes daily, 61.3% smoked their first cigarette in the first half hour after waking up. Of the smokers, 28.8% were highly dependent, 13.0% were very highly dependent. CO levels were significantly higher in those who smoked in the workplace, who smoked mostly in the morning time, and those who started smoking at 7 years of age and younger (p < 0.05). FEV1, FVC, FEF25-75 values of morning smokers were significantly lower (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Unfortunately, the first smoking age was very low, the first cigarette of the day was lit in a short time after waking up, and family/ friend's attitudes and behaviours were encouraging in this age group. More attention should be paid to this issue and especially new preventive projects should be implemented to protect young people from smoking.
