Greater left frontal activation appears to be a measure of appetitive reactivity for desired stimuli, such as alcohol cues. However, inconsistencies in past research examining frontal asymmetry to appetitive stimuli suggest that individual differences strongly influence frontal asymmetry to appetitive stimuli. Because core personality systems of approach, avoidance, and supervisory control play a fundamental role in directing alcohol behavior, the current study sought to determine which core system would influence asymmetric frontal activation to alcohol cues. Results revealed that greater trait impulsivity (reduced functioning of the supervisory control system) is related to greater relative left frontal activation in response to alcohol cues. Approach motivation and avoidance motivation were unrelated to greater relative left frontal activation in response to alcohol cues. These results suggest that decreased activation of the supervisory control system (increased trait impulsivity) is responsible for appetitive reactivity to alcohol cues.

‘Thinking Before Acting’ or ‘Acting Before Thinking’: Antecedents of Individual Action Propensity in Work Situations

We introduce the concept of ‘individual action propensity’ to examine the approach of individuals towards solving situations for which they lack knowledge and/or experience about what to do. We focus on a naturally contrasting pair of responses: ‘thinking before acting’ or ‘acting before thinking’, and associate low action propensity with thinking one's way into understanding how to act, and high action propensity with acting one's way into understanding such situations. We build on regulatory mode theory – with its dimensions of locomotion and assessment and the trade‐off between speed and accuracy – to examine individual characteristics as predictors of individual action propensity. We find that individual action propensity is associated with being a woman, having fewer years of formal education, not relying on help‐seeking behaviours, and having a positive attitude towards spontaneity. Our findings shed light on why individuals take action, or not, and provide implications for research on organizational action propensity.

Zusammenfassung: Der vorliegende beitrag überprüft zehn empirische Studien zur Hypothese, dass es sich bei der Spontaneität um eine positive persönlichkeitseigenschaft handelt. er untersucht die theoretische Behauptung, dass Spontaneität einen positiven Bezug zu Wohlbefinden und einen negativen zu psychischen anpassungsstörungen aufweist. Diese untersuchungen werfen ein neues Licht auf die Natur und die bedeutung von Spontaneität, und versuchen probleme, Verwirrungen und die für die traditionelle Definition der Spontaneität so typischen Inkonsistenzen zu vermeiden. Die empirischen untersuchungen zur Spontaneität wurden durchgeführt mithilfe des überarbeiteten Spontaneität Assessment Inventars ( SAI-R) und dessen Vorgänger, dem Spontaneität Assessment Inventar ( SAI). Der Überblicksartikel diskutiert die probleme mit der traditionellen Definition der Spontaneität und die Gründe, warum bislang keine empirischen Untersuchungen durchgeführt wurden. Es wird einerseits eine alternative Daten-basierte Definition vorgeschlagen, andererseits ein neues untersuchungs-tool für die quantitative Forschung zugänglich gemacht.
