The Relationship between Climate Change, Variability, and Food Security: Understanding the Impacts and Building Resilient Food Systems in West Pokot County, Kenya

Abstract: This study integrated local and scientific knowledge to assess the impacts of climate change and variability on food security in West Pokot County, Kenya from 1980–2012. It characterized rainfall and temperature from 1980–2011 and the phenology of agricultural vegetation, assessed land use and land cover (LULC) changes, and surveyed local knowledge and perceptions of the relationships between climate change and variability, land use decisions, and food (in)security. The 124 respondents were aware of long-term … Show more

“…For all treatments, yields obtained without fertilizer application were significantly lower as compared to the treatment with fertilizer, indicating the crucial role of mineral fertilization in transplanting, as well as in farmer practice. This increase in yields is in agreement with the results of several other authors in Sudano-Sahelian countries [8,[43][44][45]. However, proper adaptation requires an integrated approach including proper planting, for there is an important interaction between fertilizer application and mode of planting for most of the traits evaluated [8,46].…”

“…Although the literature on the influence of climate change on agriculture usually presents increased variability as a key challenge (Alemayehu and Bewket, 2017; Karki et al, 2020;Obwocha et al, 2022;Reidsma et al, 2010), few studies based on interviews with vegetable farmers have clearly highlighted this issue (Arimi, 2021;Asadu et al, 2018;Irham et al, 2022;Tekuni Nakuja, 2012). The farmers in the present study…”

“…While numerous efforts have been made to increase Kenyan communities' ability to adapt to climate change, commensurate success for investments in climate adaptation and resilience has not been realized. If the current trajectory continues, smallholder farmers will suffer greater impacts from emerging climate-change-related problems [17].…”
