Purpose Drawing upon the cognitive-behavioral model of pathological Internet use (PIU) and tunnel effect, this study aimed to construct a moderated mediation model from the perspective of social ecology. Specifically, the model investigated the relationship between perceived social mobility and smartphone dependence, with a focus on the mediating role of hope and the moderating effect of family socioeconomic status (SES) underlying this relationship. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 718 Chinese university students ( M age = 19.19, 70.2% female) from Beijing, Henan, and Tianjin, who anonymously filled out the Perceptions of Socioeconomic Mobility Scale, Mobile Phone Addiction Index Scale, Openness to the Future Scale, and family socioeconomic status questionnaire. Preliminary data analysis was executed using SPSS 22.0, and the moderated mediation effect was tested using the latent moderated structural equations approach in Mplus 8.3. Results The results showed that (a) less perceived social mobility was linked with greater smartphone dependence; (b) hope mediated the aforementioned relationship; and (c) family SES moderated the first-stage path of the indirect effect through hope. For university students with low (rather than high) family SES, their level of hope increased with the improvement of perceived social mobility, and in turn, that of smartphone dependence decreased. Conclusion These findings suggest that positive perceptions of upward social class mobility and hopeful attitudes toward future opportunities and personal development among disadvantaged university students may alleviate their reliance on smartphones. Researchers and policymakers should pay attention to the role of individuals’ perceptions of the macro environment in motivating specific risky behaviors among university students. Future interventions are essential to mitigate pessimistic environmental perceptions and foster a sense of hope among university students.

BackgroundExisting literature on the relationship between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and aggression has primarily focused on examining their unidirectional association, with limited attention paid to the bidirectional nature of this relationship, particularly when considering the role of empathy. This study employs a novel moderated network approach to examine the bidirectional relationship between problematic smartphone use and aggression, while also investigating the moderating mechanism of empathy.MethodsA total of 2,469 students (49.1% female, Meanage = 13.83, SDage = 1.48) from 35 junior and senior high schools in Harbin, China, participated in this study. Empathy level, aggressiveness, and PSU symptoms were assessed using the Basic Empathy Scale, the Buss-Warren Aggression Questionnaire, and the Mobile Phone Addiction Index.ResultsAnalysis revealed that the relationship between PSU and aggression was complex and bidirectional. The strongest association was observed between “hostility” and “withdrawal/escape”. In addition, “anger” had the highest Expected Influence (EI) in both affective and cognitive moderate network models. An important discovery was also made regarding the conditional effect of “productive loss” and “physical aggression” across different levels of affective empathy. Specifically, at lower levels of affective empathy, a positive bidirectional relationship was found between “productive loss” and “physical aggression”. However, this relationship turned negative and bidirectional at higher levels of affective empathy.ConclusionThe findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics between PSU and aggression and highlight the need for targeted interventions that promote affective empathy to mitigate the negative consequences of excessive smartphone use.

Background: Problematic smartphone use can negatively affect people on a cognitive and behavioral level. Some studies found a negative association between self-esteem and problematic smartphone use but there are different results. This may be due to a lack of differentiation between explicit and implicit self-esteem. Previous studies have also examined the relationship between self-esteem, aggressiveness, and problematic smartphone use, but it is unclear if aggressiveness plays a mediating role in self-esteem and problematic smartphone use. To address these gaps in knowledge, we conducted a study where we separately analyzed the relationships between explicit and implicit self-esteem and problematic smartphone use, and investigated whether aggressiveness acts as a mediator between them. Method:A cross-sectional study with167 College students was carried out. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used to measure the participants' explicit self-esteem. The Implicit Association Test was used to measure implicit self-esteem. The Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version was used to measure the participants' problematic smartphone use. The Chinese College Students' Version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire was used to measure aggressiveness. Results: The findings show a negative correlation between problematic smartphone use and explicit self-esteem, but not implicit self-esteem. The connection between explicit self-esteem and problematic smartphone use is totally mediated by aggressiveness. Conclusion: This study emphasize the important role of aggressiveness in problematic smartphone use behaviors of people with low explicit self-esteem. Aggressiveness plays a completely mediating role between explicit self-esteem and problematic smartphone use. Our study provides a basis for future interventions for problematic smartphone use.
