Environmental protection is an essential issue for sustainable development, and its execution power mainly comes from individual environmental protection behavior. This study investigates the resident environmental protection behaviors and influencing factors in the ecologically fragile areas of western China based on a total of 1062 households by adopting the participatory assessment method. Then, this study used the structural equation model to empirically analyze the impact of social capital, environmental risk perception, and environmental awareness on residents' environmental protection behavior. The results showed that environmental awareness is the basis for practicing environmental protection behavior, consistent with the existing research; social capital has a significant impact on residents' environmental protection behavior, with an impact coefficient of 0.347. Hence, environmental risk perception has an indirect influence on environmental protection behavior through environmental awareness. Besides, compared with urban residents, rural residents' environmental awareness and social capital have a stronger role in environmental protection behavior. The study clarified the influence path of residents' environmental protection behavior, thus effectively providing a decision-making basis for the government to guide residents in the environmental governance system.

This study estimates factors of importance for the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions generated by travellers flying for different reasons based on representative Austrian micro data for the period 2014–2016. The annual average number of flights taken by adults vary between 0.1 (visiting friends) and 0.8 (going on holiday), and the amount of CO2e emissions generated by each return flight is approximately 1100 kg. This leads to a total of 6 million tonnes CO2e emissions per year. Results of the Pseudo Poisson Maximum Likelihood estimations reveal that the amount of CO2e emissions created is related to socio-demographic, locational and seasonal factors, although mainly for the largest group of travellers: the holiday makers. In this group, individuals with university degrees, young persons (16–24 years) and capital city residents generate the largest amounts of emissions, as opposed to persons with children and large households. Residents of the capital region each quarter cause 64 kg more CO2e emissions than inhabitants of rural areas, persons with university degrees create 74 kg larger emissions than those without degrees and young adults instigate 90 kg more emissions than middle-aged persons. CO2e emissions of holiday flights are highest in the first quarter of the year. The importance of education is also pronounced for CO2e emissions related to business travel, as is gender.

The air pollution problem, represented by the frequent occurrence of haze, has seriously affected the quality of China’s economic growth. Along with the in-depth implementation of the concept of sustainable development and the continued strengthening of the central government’s environmental accountability, local governments’ environmental concerns have also increased. Therefore, can the local government mitigate the haze pollution by an emphasis on environmental concerns? Based on theoretical analysis, this paper uses text analysis and machine learning to construct local government environmental concerns indicators, and selects a panel of 284 cities in China from 2007 to 2020 for research. The study shows that local government environmental concerns effectively reduce haze pollution, and the conclusion still holds after considering robustness. Local government ecological concerns can force cities to improve green innovation and industrial structure optimization, alleviating haze pollution. There are heterogeneous effects of local government environmental concerns on haze pollution under different regions, different resource endowments, different central assessment systems and different changes in government officials; the Difference-In-Difference results show that, in addition to local government environmental concerns, central government ecological concerns can also reduce haze pollution. Based on the above findings, the central government should further improve the officials’ appraisal system and give play to the government’s active role in environmental governance.
