The Relationship between Ethno-Linguistic Composition of Social Networks and Activity Space: A Study Using Mobile Phone Data

Abstract: This study is a contribution to the discussion on the ethnic segregation cycle, through the examination of individuals’ activity spaces—including residence and workplace—and from the perspective of social networks. Bridging social ties can be a key factor in higher minority inclusion and in breaking the vicious circle of segregation. “…Recent studies (Potarca, 2017; Thomas, 2020) show that meeting online is linked to lower couple endogamy than is having school, family, friends or religious venues as intermediaries. However, research also shows that online and physical social interactions are mutually related to each other: physical proximity fosters online meetings, and online interaction facilitates physical meetings (Silm et al, 2021). Hence, future research on mixed‐union formation needs to shed more light on the various physical domains, on online meeting between people and on how physical and online meeting could be related to each other.…”

“…On the other hand, the spatial distribution of social networks can serve as an essential measure of activity space-based segregation (Lee and Kwan, 2011;Silm et al, 2021). In classical sociospatial segregation studies, attention has been given to the influence of social networks on the formation of ethnic ghettos, which in Transactions in turn leads to a segregated urban spatial structure (van Kempen and Özüekren, 1998).…”

“…In classical sociospatial segregation studies, attention has been given to the influence of social networks on the formation of ethnic ghettos, which in Transactions in turn leads to a segregated urban spatial structure (van Kempen and Özüekren, 1998). As sociospatial segregation research has shifted toward a people-based paradigm, some scholars have further emphasized the importance of individual social networks in measuring segregation (Silm et al, 2021;Verdier and Zenou, 2017). An individual's social network and activity patterns are closely linked in space and time (Kwan, 2007).…”
