The Relationship Between Generalized Resistance Resources, Sense of Coherence, and Health Among Finnish People Aged 65-69

Abstract: Abstract. The present study investigated the appropriateness of Antonovsky's model, in which generalized resistance resources (GRRs) facilitate an individual's sense of coherence (SOC); which in turn is assumed to sustain health. The proposed model was tested using a sample of 320 Finnish persons (132 of them were men and 188 women) aged 65-69 years. The GRRs investigated were family income, cognitive functioning, years of formal education, marital status, and physical exercise. Health was measured by means of… Show more

“…As suggested by these researchers, marriage may enhance health in several ways such as influencing the physical and psychosocial environment in which the individual lives. These results were similar to those reported by several other studies demonstrating the beneficial effect of marriage in buffering against morbidity and mortality, especially for men (see Read, Aunola, Feldt, Leinonen, & Ruoppila, 2005 for a review). Several explanations were proposed regarding these results, such as the possibility that men may profit more than women from marriage as a GRR because healthy lifestyle and behaviors are more encouraged by wives than husbands, due to the women's tendency to value health more than men (Read et al, 2005).…”

“…For instance, Read, Aunola, Feldt, Leinonen, and Ruoppila (2005) examined a sample of Finnish participants aged 65-69 years. Outcomes from their study yielded that for men, unlike women, marital status has an important impact as a GRR.…”

“…En la literatura científica, podemos encontrar diversos recursos que han sido vinculados con la formación de un elevado SOC (Antonovsky, 1979;Cohen, 1997;Johnson, 2004;Read, Aunola, Feldt, Leinonen y Ruoppila, 2005;Volanen, Lahelma, Silventoinen y Suominen, 2004; Wiesmann y Hanninch, 2010). Pallant y Lae (2002) encontraron que la autoestima, el optimismo y el locus de control construían y daban forma al SOC.…”

“…SOC seemed to buffer the impact of a recent stressful life event on self reported health status among a nationally representative sample of 6505 Canadians aged 30 years of age or greater (Richardson & Ratner, 2005). Other large studies suggest that a sense of coherence was positively related to physical, social, and mental health as well as living conditions and social support (Holmberg, Thelin, & Stiernstrom, 2005;Read, Aunola, Feldt, Leinonen, & Ruoppila, 2005). While SOC has not been explored with spiritual or religious variables and particularly with IPV, it holds promise as lens that may help individuals to see that their lives are larger than the events that happen to them.…”
