The relationship between MMP9 and ADRA2A gene polymorphisms and mothers–newborns’ nutritional status: an exploratory path model (STROBE compliant article)

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study was to evaluate the direct effects of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP9 rs17577, MMP9 rs17576) and alfa 2 adrenergic receptor (ADRA2A rs553668) gene polymorphisms investigated in mothers and their newborns on maternal weight gain (MWG) during pregnancy and the newborn’s birth weight (BW), taking into account the presence of other related factors.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study in 197 mother–newborn pairs in an Obstetrics Gynecology Clinic, in order to evaluate the demog… Show more

“…New blood vessels formed from preexisting cell connections through mitosis, sprouting, proliferation, and migration of ECs and growth of new capillaries (Longchamp et al, 2018; Nowak-Sliwinska et al, 2018; Zhang et al, 2018). Matrix metallopeptidase 9 enhances tissue remodeling by degrading the extracellular matrix and plays an important role in angiogenesis (Mărginean et al, 2019). Vascular endothelial growth factor promotes EC migration, proliferation, and vessel formation by acting on ECs and combining with the cell-surface tyrosine kinase receptor VEGFR2, initiating an orchestrated cascade of signal transduction via the PI3K and MAPK pathways (Longchamp et al, 2018).…”

“…8 Previous studies by our team showed that, in Romanian women, the prevalence of pregnant women with excessive GWG has also increased during recent years. 14 , 33 , 34 …”

“…Short-term complications of excessive GWG include gestational diabetes, gestational arterial hypertension 4 , 9 , 10 that should be differentiated by other conditions, 11 an increased risk of cesarean section delivery, 12 and neonatal complications, such previously giving birth to a macrosomic neonate or other life-threatening conditions. 13 16 Long-term consequences of excessive GWG include maternal weight retention and excessive neonatal adiposity, which eventually lead to a continuous increase in the obesity rate in the general population. 17 19 Excessive GWG is difficult to be reduced after delivery, resulting in maternal adiposity and weight retention.…”

“…Several studies underlined the role of genetic determinism in the development of obesity or DM, pre-pregnancy weight, GWG, and postpartum persistence weight gain. [13,4143] It was proved that the T allele of GNB3 rs5443 SNP is associated with obesity, atherosclerosis, hypertension, or DM, [2729] while other alleles were not found to be related with this disorders. [31,32,44] The contradictory results were most likely due to the small number of cases, ethnicity or assessed genes.…”

“…Among these, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) gene polymorphisms like MMP9 rs17577, MMP9 rs17576, and alfa 2 adrenergic receptor rs553668 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) are involved in birth weight determinism. [13] Moreover, the studies performed on obese children and healthy controls proved that gene polymorphisms of interleukin 6, leptin receptor, tumor necrosis factor alpha own a major role in the development of childhood obesity. [1417]…”
