The Relationship between Music and Food Intake: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Food intake has been shown to be related to several environmental factors including the presence of music. However, previous findings of the relationship between music and food intake are inconsistent. In the present study, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to quantitatively review the extent to which music is associated with food intake as well as to investigate potential moderators that might have contributed to the heterogeneity of the existing findings. Literature was searched on four dat… Show more

“…No significant effects of water or bird sounds on hunger, healthy/unhealthy craving and food intake could be detected in the current study. Most existing literature on the food-related effects of sound has not focused on nature sound but on music (Cui et al, 2021; Guedes et al, 2023) and sound volume or noise. Even when specific to nature sounds, several experiments have been done on taste as outcome variable instead of craving or intake.…”

“…The next step might be to check this dietary link for the auditory aspects of nature. Most research on the food-related effects (e.g., healthy choice and food reward delay) of sound has not focused on nature sounds but on music (Cui et al, 2021) and sound volume or noise (Biswas et al, 2019; Graziose et al, 2019; Peng-Li, Alves Da Mota et al, 2022). The potential mechanisms for sound effects in general on food as summarized in a review are in line with the above-mentioned three environment-diet mechanisms: emotional transference in which enjoying the sound lets you also enjoy the food; stimulation of congruent taste or semantic priming; and attentional distraction (Spence et al, 2019).…”

“…Since GLN and antioxidant parameters were measured in different tissues (breast muscle, thigh muscle, and serum), a subgroup analysis was conducted to elucidate differences among tissues or to explain potential heterogeneity. In the case of I 2 > 75%, a subgroup analysis was not possible (BWG, FI, and FCR) so a Baujat plot and influential case diagnostics were performed to detect outlying studies, and the pooled effect sizes were recalculated [ 31 ].…”

“…Lévi-Strauss affirmed that "the musical creator is a being comparable to the gods, and music itself [is] the supreme mystery of the science of man" 94(p216) ; indeed, music has been found to affect appetite as part of the socializing importance of meals. 95 The reciprocal effects between food and modern culture were summarized by Parasecoli: "The presence of food in everyday life is pervasive, permeating popular culture as a relevant marker of power, cultural capital, class, gender, ethnicity, and religion … Meanwhile, our own flesh becomes fuel [italics added] for all kinds of cultural battles among different visions of personhood, family, society, polity, and economics." 96(p274) These scenarios are still evolving.…”
