The relationship between skin aging and steady state ultraweak photon emission as an indicator of skin oxidative stress in vivo

Abstract: These results suggest that steady state UPE reflects not only intrinsic skin aging and cutaneous color but also the current oxidative status independent of skin aging.

“…Therefore, the applications of SPE for the detection of metabolic processes in biological system are widely used. Present studies have suggested that the biophoton emission is a meaningful indicator of physiological state in biological systems [ 8 16 , 16 20 , 51 53 ]. In this view, we measured the SPE and contents of specific active compounds of roots and flowers buds with different growth ages and varieties of several fresh Chinese herbal medicines in order to prove whether the growth ages and varieties of fresh herbs could affect their SPE intensity and whether there was a close relationship between the bioactive constituents of fresh herbs and their SPE intensities.…”

“…ROS can inappropriately activate signaling pathways, interfere with genome maintenance and affect apoptosis. Numerous studies have tested the effects of solar radiation and oxidative stress on the skin [ 29 , 83 , 84 , 85 ], and oxidative stress has been linked to age-related loss of skin elasticity [ 86 , 87 , 88 ], defective cellular signaling [ 68 ] and photoaging [ 89 , 90 ]. Because it triggers cellular damage pathways, oxidative stress activates cellular senescence which is thought to directly lead to photoaging [ 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 ].…”

“…A variety of other damages, involved in apoptosis, inflammation, carcinogenesis, and photoaging, are indirectly induced by UVinduced oxidative stress (Kulms et al, 2002;Nishisgori, 2015;Synowiec et al, 2015). Numerous studies have reported that UV-induced reactive oxygen species trigger damage response pathways by oxidative DNA damages (Gabe et al, 2014;Naylor et al, 2011;Prunier et al, 2012).…”
