The Relationship Between Vitamin D and Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract: Background and AimsThe relationship between postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration as well as vitamin D supplementation has been discussed controversially. The relation of pre-operative vitamin D status and POAF remains unclear. Methods and ResultsWe analysed the risk of POAF in a prospective, observational cohort study of n = 201 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) with 25(OH)D concentration. The median age was 66.6 years, 15.4% were… Show more

“…The postoperative ICU stay and complications are higher in pediatric cardiac surgery patients with VDD. 3 However, a few recent articles have not detected any difference in postoperative outcome of VDD patients related to atrial fibrillation and other parameters, 6 In the hospital setup, perioperative vitamin D therapy is the way forward to normalize the serum level. Hence, the outcome of the therapy needs to be systematically reviewed for clinical recommendation.…”

“…The vast majority of the papers reviewed below addressed the effect of VitD deficiency and/or supplementation on the occurrence of PoAF in the context of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) [ 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 ]. During the hospitalization period following this procedure, patients often develop AF with varying frequency.…”

“…Most studies have been observational, with some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) also conducted. Still, their results have been mixed in establishing a correlation between low vitamin D levels and post-CABG AF [5][6][7][8][9][10]. To examine the impact of vitamin D supplementation on reducing POAF in patients with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency, we performed a meta-analysis by combining data from three randomized controlled trials.…”
