The research on the effect of MgCO3 on the grain refinement in AZ31 magnesium alloy

Abstract: The effect of MgCO 3 addition on the as-cast microstructure of AZ31 magnesium alloy has been widely investigated. The results show that the average grain size of the a-Mg grain in AZ31 magnesium alloy decreases from about 570 lm to 100 lm by the addition of 0.6 wt.% MgCO 3 as gain refiner at 760 8C. Based on the analysis of EDS, theoretical calculation of E bind and Gibbs free energy, we esteem that grain refiner mechanism is mainly attributed to the generation of Al 4 C 3 , which can be serviced as nucleation… Show more

“…The possible resultant products in the Mg-8Al alloy upon the addition of CO 2 gas at 740°C are Al 4 C 3 , MgO and Al 2 O 3 because the Gibbs free energy values of MgC 2 and Mg 2 C 3 , which are formed via the reaction of Mg with the newly generated C at 740°C, are positive [17]. The Gibbs free energy values for Al 4 C 3 , MgO and Al 2 O 3 , which are formed by the following reactions (1)–(3), are negative.…”

“…The previous section determined that the use of a fine filter within the well combined with Ar bubbling was the most effective for increasing mechanical properties and will be referred to as "filter + Ar bubbling" hereafter. with C inoculation is often described to be Al 4 C 3 [2,5,9,17,18,26,87,89,92,95,107,121,135,136,138,140,[200][201][202]216,224,[230][231][232][233][234][235][236]242,244,249,250,253] but recent research point towards Al 2 MgC 2 [132,139,232,248,251]. The observations from Figure 5-14c show indications of the remnants of these phases by the presence of C and O around the blocky Al 8 Mn 5 as they are highly hydrophobic as described by Equation 17and observations in literature [132,139,248].…”
