The response of a CdTe detector for gamma rays in a high magnetic field

Abstract

In this paper, we report on a series of measurements performed on a 3 Â 3 Â 1 mm CdTe detector inserted into a magnetic field with an intensity of up to 2.857 T. The resolution, the centroid shift, the skewness and the photopeak efficiency were determined using a detector setup with and without the presence of the magnetic field to investigate the effect on the charge collection behavior from the strong magnetic field. The measurements were carried out using the radioisotopes 241 Am, 133 Ba, 137 Cs and 152 Eu. The spectroscopic response of the detector from 13.80 to 1408.01 keV photon energy was evaluated. It is observed that the energy resolution decreases with time. Also, the efficiency loss is determined. There is a shift in the peak position in the magnetic field. The influence of the magnetic field causes a tail on the low energy side. Moreover, no problems in the electronics due to the magnetic field were observed.
