The Results in Patients Implanted with the Nucleus Double Array Cochlear Implant: Pitch Discrimination and Auditory Performance

Abstract: The additional apical array leads to significant improvement in auditory performance in patients with obliterated cochleae by increasing the number of intracochlear electrodes. Despite reduced pitch discrimination, the apical array provides important information for speech recognition. For this reason the Double Array provides a profound advantage for patients with obliterated or surgically inaccessible cochleae.

“…In such cases, cochlear implantation can often be successfully performed after a drill-out procedure limited to the basal turn. Furthermore, the results can be further enhanced by the use of cochlear implants with double array electrodes [9]. It is acknowledged that ABI carries higher risks as compared to cochlear implantation [10].…”

“…A double electrode array was released in 2002, with 2 arrays of 11 electrodes each. 82 This array might be suitable in cases where normal insertion of the standard array is not possible but 2 shallow insertions, one in the basal turn of the cochlea and one in the second turn, is feasible.…”

“…Spezielle Implantate mit 2 Elektrodenträgern (z. B. Nucleus Combi 11+12+1) können so auch bei partiell ossifizierter Kochlea in die basale und mittlere Windung eingesetzt werden.Hierdurch wird das Einführen einer größeren Anzahl von intrakochleär platzierten Elektroden ermöglicht [24,26].…”
