The role of caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways of apoptosis in the premature rupture of the membranes: A case-control study

Abstract: Background: Premature rupture of membrane (PROM) remains a problem in obstetrics, the mechanisms of PROM have not been clearly defined. Apoptosis is thought to play a key role in the mechanism, via caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways. Caspase-3, Apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), and anti-apoptosis B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) are hypothesized to be involved in PROM. Objective: To determine the role of caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways in the mechanism of PROM. Ma… Show more

“…Zhang et al ( 19 ) notes that Keap-1/Nrf2 signaling pathway activation following oxidative stress is associated with patients with PPROM (preterm premature rupture of membrane). A related study ( 20 ) shows that high Caspase-3, AIF, and low Bcl-2 expression are risk factors for PROM. Infants in the PROM group experienced higher rates of infection, asphyxia, and jaundice.…”

“…The apoptosis pathway may also prove difficult to predict, as cancer cells notoriously are able to change biochemical pathway compositions and upregulate new inhibitors. As it is proven that apoptosis can occur independent of caspase function (Negara et al, 2020), the pathway may be altered so that caspase activation is not induced. It may also occur that caspases are mutated beyond functionality, losing their ability to initiate the cascade of apoptotic activities, and thus making XIAP removal from the cytosol useless.…”
