The Role of Somatic Maturation on Bioimpedance Patterns and Body Composition in Male Elite Youth Soccer Players

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of chronological age (CA) and somatic maturation on body composition (BC) and bioimpedance parameters in male elite soccer players. BC and bioimpedance variables were measured in a sample of 249 players aged 9−18 years of age and registered in two professional Italian soccer teams. Results from segmental analysis showed transition time points where the influence of CA and somatic maturation on bioimpedance patterns and BC characteristics increased or subsi… Show more

“…The use of appropriate R-Xc graphs allows for the correct interpretation of BIVA patterns in the assessment of BC, adding useful information regarding the influence of BC on somatic maturation in young athletes [19]. While specific references do not exist for every single sport, establishing BIVA references for the general male and female athlete populations may be useful even if values may differ slightly between individual sports.…”

“…An influencing factor of BC is somatic maturation [20,21]. Athletes with similar chronological age competing in the same category levels can, in fact, show a difference in maturity status, where the offset is reached at 14 ± 1 years in boys and at 12 ± 1 years in girls [22].…”

“…The bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) is used in clinical and sports fields to study the change in body fluids and nutritional state [10][11][12][13]. It represents the raw bioimpendance parameters (resistance (R) and reactance (Xc)) as a point on the R-Xcgraph in which both length and slope are considered.…”
